Dennis Corporation was awarded the Palmetto Pillar Award for Excellence in Technology in Industry from the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the Columbia Information Technology Council in a ceremony held August 14, 2008 at the Embassy Suites in Columbia, SC.  Dennis Corporation was honored for their innovative work on South Carolina Highway Five (SC 5) in York County.

Specifically, Dennis Corporation was recognized for their use of the Robotic Technology known as a Robotic Total Station on the project. This product eliminates the need for an instrument operator and allows a one man survey crew to do the job previously performed by a crew of two or more individuals.

The SC 5 project consists of a two-lane road which is being upgraded to a four-lane divided highway. Dennis Corporation was tasked with the construction staking of this project- no small task at over 7.5 miles.  This project required Dennis Corporation to stake almost 8,000 points.

Due to the Robotic Technology, most of that staking was completed by just one man, working alone, Survey Party Chief, Jeff Gwin. Using conventional survey methods, a traditional 2 person crew could stake 450-500 points per week. With the new technology, Mr. Gwin is able to stake 550-600 points per week.

This is not the first time Dennis Corporation has been recognized for its innovative use of Robotic Technology on the SC 5 project. In May of 2008, Dennis Corporation’s application of this technology was recognized by a worldwide surveying publication, Technology&more. The article heralds Dennis Corporation’s efficient application of the technology stating,

“By standardizing equipment and making a commitment to one-person crews, Dennis Corporation has been able to maximize their investment in progressive technology and experienced personnel, while also providing accurate, timely service to some of their most demanding customers. So in addition to saving money, they’re also getting jobs done faster and keeping quality high. It’s not just the equipment of course, but intelligent use of advanced survey technology is part of the reason this progressive firm is one of the fastest-growing consulting engineering firms in the South.”
