Dennis Corporation president Dan Dennis delivered the invocation at the second annual Evening of Remembrance at the South Carolina Midlands First Responders Remembrance Memorial on Sept. 11, 2012. The ceremony commemorated the ultimate sacrifice of First Responders across the Midlands, following the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy, and introduced five names, including one K-9, to the memorial plaque.

The event featured music from the 208th Army Band, guest speakers Steven Benjamin, mayor of the City of Columbia, Randy Halfacre, mayor of the Town of Lexington and a keynote address by Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the adjutant general of the South Carolina National Guard. A reception followed at the adjoining Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

The South Carolina Midlands First Responders Memorial comprises two 25-foot granite towers and two twisted steel beams from the World Trade Center. The Memorial bears the names of more than 50 first responders, including military, EMS, law enforcement and fire service, who lost their lives after Sept. 11, 2001. The result of a partnership of more than 14 businesses, local first responders, the City of Columbia and Richland and Lexington Counties, the Memorial now stands outside of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
