Recently, Dennis Corporation Construction Management employee, Jeffrey Barnes, was nominated for the distinctive honor of the 2010 Beaufort County Military Citizen of the Year Award through the CIVITAS Program, which is sponsored by the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Barnes is a citizen of Beaufort County and works in Dennis Corporation’s Bluffton branch office.

As an active participant in the Beaufort County community, Mr. Barnes is involved heavily in various arenas, including serving as Commander of the nonprofit organization, Sons of American Veterans Post 70 in which he has organized many military support fundraisers; directly participating in Beaufort County Military Appreciation Day; and serving as Chairman of the Port Royal Old Village Association. In reference to his community service involvement, Mr. Barnes stated, “Beaufort has been my home since 2003, and my parents raised me to be involved in the community. I strongly believe in community support for the military and Beaufort is the town in which to do that.”

His extensive military volunteer experience and support also make Mr. Barnes a worthy candidate for the award. Mr. Barnes has been actively involved in volunteer activities, including membership in the Coast Guard Auxiliary from 1998-2004. During a portion of his tenure, Mr. Barnes was stationed in Charleston, SC where he qualified for Search and Rescue and progressed to the rank of Coxain. His service was originally through the U.S. Department of Transportation, but in 2001 after the events of 9/11, he was transferred to the Department of Homeland Security where he became a founding member. While serving for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, all of his efforts were purely voluntary, and he did not receive any sort of financial compensation for his work.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a nonmilitary civilian volunteer opportunity in which tens of thousands of U.S. citizens throughout the nation give their time and efforts to assist in carrying out the Coast Guard’s mission. Dennis Corporation is very proud of Mr. Barnes and his nomination. The promotion of active involvement in the communities in which its employees live and work has always been a large component of Dennis Corporation’s values.

The CIVITAS Program is an annual awards program, held during the Beaufort Regional Chamber’s annual meeting, which “honors contributions of area businesses and individuals to the community and business climate.”
