With shovels in hand, representatives from Beaufort County, Beaufort County Council, City of Beaufort, Town of Port Royal, Dennis Corporation, Sanders Brothers Construction and United Contractors officially kicked off construction at the site of the SC 802 Bridge and Roadway Widening Project in Beaufort County, SC.

The $45.5 million dollar project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion created by the rapid development surrounding the project area in recent years. In particular, the McTeer Bridge supports 22,000 vehicles per day, an excess of the suggested capacity by 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles. Together, the existing McTeer Bridge and the proposed parallel addition of the new SC 802 Bridge will accommodate 35,000 vehicles per day.

The construction of the new SC 802 Bridge over the Beaufort River and the widening of SC 802 along Lady’s Island Drive and Savannah Highway projects are included in the County’s One Percent Sales Tax Road Improvement Program. Dennis Corporation is managing this program, which encompasses multiple transportation projects throughout Beaufort County.
