Dennis Corporation was recently selected to assist Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum with professional engineering services. Dennis Corporation is currently conducting a feasibility study on the USS Clamagore to determine if she can be moved to a permanent landside berth. After performing a feasibility study, Dennis Corporation, teaming with Volkert and Associates, Inc. of Mobile, AL, will complete all engineering designs and permits as well as manage the construction and movement process.
The USS Clamagore is a 325 foot Balao submarine that was commissioned in 1945 to serve during the Cold War and was decommissioned in 1975. The submarine came to Patriots Point in 1981.
Over the years, the USS Clamagore’s hull and super structure have deteriorated due to saltwater corrosion, marine growth and weather at her current location in the Charleston Harbor. In addition to determining if the landside berth is feasible, a portion of Dennis Corporation’s study will focus on repairs to the USS Clamagore to restore the structural and historical integrity of the vessel. Another portion of the feasibility study will focus on the environmental impacts of the project to the area surrounding the Museum.
